IBSC is truly the Champion Club!

The  31st National Inter-Club Swimming Championship 2012 was held at Kompleks Akuatik Negeri Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu from 11 to 13 November, 2012 with the registration of about 750 participants from 30 clubs around Malaysia.

The monsoon season did not hamper Team IBSC from travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu as the urge to win back the Champion Trophy for the President Cup 2012 was much too great. IBSC may not be the largest contingent in the swim meet but the team spirit was stronger than the wave at the east coast.

Team IBSC was represented by 68 swimmers including retired swimmers Chan Kah Yan and Shahir Sulaiman. With collective team effort, at the end of the 3-day competition, IBSC has amassed a total of 1454.5 points to claim back the trophy once again for the 15th time. The first runner-up was last year's defending champion, PADE Supersharkz with 649.5 points whilst Penang Swimming Club got third placing with 408.5 points.

The 3-day championship has taken a toll on parents and supporters who either drove or flew all the way from KL to support the team, but the effort was well worth it and truly rewarding.

IBSC and its committee appreciate all the hard work of the coaches in nurturing the swimmers to a good standard of quality in bringing about the success in this President Cup. The President of IBSC, Mr Teo Mua Seng congratulated the swimmers and also thanked the parents and supporters in rendering their help and relentless support during the 3-day meet.

The Star : Kevin is richer for the experience after competing with Sun Yang

By LIM TEIK HUAT

Ready for action: Kevin Yeap (left) and compatriot Khoo Cai Lin have both qualified for the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona next July.

PETALING JAYA: How many swimmers can say they have competed against an Olympic champion and world record holder? Not many, right?

That is why Kevin Yeap was glowing with pride when he returned home from the Asian Swimming Championships in Dubai yesterday.

Kevin had the chance to swim not once, but three times, in the same pool with London Olympic double gold medallist Sun Yang of China.

Sun Yang, who trains in Gold Coast, Australia, is currently the most marketable athlete in his home country after winning two Olympic gold medals in world record times.

And he lived up to his billing at the Asian meet by winning three gold medals – in the 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle – in new meet record times.

Sun Yang never flaunted his star status in Dubai, leaving Kevin humbled by the experienced.

“He was humble despite his giant status. He was not arrogant and easily approachable. I managed to chat with him in Dubai. I took part in the same events as him (200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle) and managed to make the finals in all three.

“I’ve raced with him at the Guangzhou Asian Games two years ago. But it was different this time as he wasn’t the world and Olympic champion then,” said Kevin, the Indonesia SEA Games gold medallist in the 1,500m freestyle.

Asked what he can take from his meeting with Sun Yang, Kevin said “it’s his rapid rise to greatness.

“It gives me great inspiration to become like him. His positive and humble attitude makes people respect him even more,” said Kevin, who narrowly missed out on the bronze for the 1,500m freestyle by 0.15sec to Takumi Komatsu of Japan.

Kevin can certainly do with a little inspiration as he has Jeffrey Ong’s long-standing record of 15:23.61 in the 1,500m freestyle since 1991 in his sights.

Kevin has a personal best of 15:32.51, which he did at the Malaysian Open in Bukit Jalil this year, and is without doubt the best candidate to erase the longest existing swimming record in the country.

The 23-year-old could do just that at the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona next July, having booked his ticket for the 400m and 1,500m freestyle events.

Besides Kevin, Khoo Cai Lin has also qualified for two quota spots in the women’s 400m and 800m freestyle for the world meet.

Tomorrow will be the divers’ turn to see action in the Asian meet, which is held every four years.

Malaysia have two men (Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yiwei) and three women (Wendy Ng Yan Yee, Cheong Jun Hoong and Loh Zhiayi) in the fray.

The NST : SPORTCHECK: More scholarships for athletes

SPONSORS: Private institutions of higher learning step up for sports

MORE than 160 national athletes will benefit from fully-sponsored scholarships from 10 private institutions of higher learning.

Memorandums of understanding were signed yesterday between the 10 institutions and the National Sports Council (NSC) as part of a programme which is valued at more than RM6.4 million. The athletes will begin their courses at the 10 institutions when they are opened for their next intake, while more could join the 160 initial beneficiaries.

This is because the Allianz University College of Medical Sciences has offered an open sponsorship of an unlimited number of intakes for national athletes, which up to the NSC to fill.

Other institutions on board are the Berjaya University College of Hospitality, Cyberlinx College, Erican College, Help University, Segi University, Sunway University, Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Taylor's University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

In officiating the signing ceremony, Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said this transforms the face of sports development in the country as for the first time private institutions of higher learning have come forward strongly to support athletes.

"Previously it was all left to the government and people were of the conception that when it comes to sports, it is all up to the government to provide," said Ahmad Shabery.

Currently three government universities provide for athletes who have completed their tertiary education at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and the Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (TMISS).

"The courses provided are not necessarily sports related but what this programme will do is to secure the future of our athletes and provide them with the training to develop their character," said Ahmad Shabery.

Asked of the need to also educate officials particularly in area of sports marketing and management, Ahmad Shabery said the NSC already provides courses that offer certificates in those areas for sports officials.

"Yes, I do agree with the need to provide such training for officials. But this is another step we have taken.
"Probably in the future we have to look into establishing a sports university," said Ahmad Shabery.

The Star : Kevin qualifies for world meet despite finishing fourth in Dubai

Sunday November 18, 2012
By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Kevin Yeap, swimming in the company of double Olympic champion Sun Yang, just missed out on a medal after coming in fourth in the 400m freestyle final at the Asian Swimming Championships in Dubai on Friday.

But there was still reason to smile for the 23-year-old Malaysian as he dipped under the World Championships qualifying time of 3:57.58 for the event.

Kevin clearly enjoyed the opportunity to swim with the Chinese world record holder and it inspired him to finish in 3:54.74, just 0.15s behind third placed Takumi Komatsu of Japan.

It was a new personal best for Kevin, who won the SEA Games gold medal in the discipline last year. More importantly, it assured him a place in the World Championships in Barcelona next July.

Kevin will definitely be primed for an assault on Daniel Bego’s national record of 3:53.99 set in 2009 at the Laos SEA Games when he swims at the world meet.

Australia-based Sun Yang raced to an easy victory with a new championship record of 3:42.49 while team-mate Hao Yun clocked 3:54.34 for the silver.

Kevin had the sixth fastest time of 4:02.47 in the preliminaries to book a place in the final.

He just missed out on the world meet qualifying mark of 1:52.21 for the 200m freestyle after finishing fifth in 1:52.64 in the final, which was also won by Sun Yang.

Khoo Cai Lin made a rare appearance in the women’s 400m individual medley and did well to reach the final, placing fifth with a personal best of 4:56.64.

Malaysia are only represented by three swimmers in Dubai. Yap See Tuan was the first to see action but missed out on making the final of the men’s 50m breaststroke.

He was 13th fastest in the preliminaries with a time of 29.96.

The Asian meet is held every four years and the diving contest will take place next week.

The Star : Meeting the challenge head-on

CONGRATULATIONS to Ian James Bar and Christina Loh for being warded the MSSWP 2012 Sportsboy and Sportsgirl respectively for the Under 18 category.

JUNIOR shuttler Leong Jun Hao faced a challenging transition adapting to a more rigorous training regime in his first season joining the national junior training camp based in Bukit Jalil this year.

The Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Form One student said it was difficult coping with the tougher training programme in a new environment at the beginning of the year.

“It was a real privilege to earn a call up to be part of the national junior set-up. I struggled with venturing into the new territory at the start. I knew that I had to persevere and overcome the odds in pursuing my dream to become a more accomplished player.

the MSSWP boys' Under-18 Sportsboy award

“I am satisfied with my progress because I feel more comfortable handling the demanding training schedule,” the former SJK (C) Chong Hwa, Setapak pupil said.

Recently, Jun Hao captured the Federal Territories Schools Sports Council (MSSWP) boys’ Under-12 Sportsboy award based on his impressive performances in the boys’ Under-12 age-group last year where he bagged an impressive double, winning both the singles and doubles in boys’ Under-12 contest at the national junior grand prix finals and the national schools (MSSM) championships.

Jun Hao admitted it was a humbling change when he could not extend his domination stepping up to compete against the stronger contenders in the more competitive age-groups.

This year, he teamed up with Soh Wooi Yik to finish third when the duo failed to go beyond the last four in the boys’ Under-15 doubles at the MSSM championships in Alor Setar, Kedah.

“I have gained experience gauging my strength in junior age-groups meet in Indonesia this year. There is nothing to shout about based on my recent performances. Recently, I won the boys’ Under-13 singles at the local Bakti junior tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

“Hopefully, I will be able to make an impact and do well in the boys’ Under-14 singles and doubles at the national junior grand prix finals next year,” said Jun Hao, adding that he is hopeful of forging a successful partnership with Rooben Raj in the new season.

Another emerging shuttler, Ho Yen Mei from BJSS, also took home the girls’ Most Promising athlete award in the secondary school section to complement the boys’ Under-18 badminton line-up’s feat emerging as the best secondary school team at the MSSWP Champions’ Awards ceremony in Kelab Darul Ehsan in Ampang recently.

Keramat district Education Department deputy director Tajudin Mohamad Nor, who represented Federal Territories Kuala Lumpur Education Department director Abdullah Mad Yunus, said they were delighted that they are still living up to the favourites’ tag in vying for honours in aquatics, chess, badminton, netball, rhythmic gymnastics, hockey, golf, squash, archery, athletics, table tennis and bowling at the national level.

“The administrators, coaches and athletes have been showing a strong desire to deliver results. We want to recognise their commitment and continue to inspire them to scale greater heights,” he added.

This year, MSSWP completed their campaign with a haul of 69 gold, 51 silver and 86 bronze medals from their participation in 23 sports at the MSSM championships.

Titiwangsa Education Found- ation chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz was also present to give away the prizes to the deserving winners.
