YOUNG talent Koh Jia Yi was the sole record-breaker in the first leg of the SportExcel junior swimming circuit at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam recently.

in the 100m breaststroke race
The 14-year-old of Pade-Supersharkz set a new record of 1:15.13 in the girls’ 13-14 category of the 100m breaststroke event in the two-day meet.

The previous record, set in 2009, was 1:15.66.

Amateur Swimming Union of Selangor secretary Helen Chang praised the swimmers for their good performance.

“They put in a lot of effort in training. It is a great feeling to see them setting new records,” she said.

Meanwhile, Jasa’s Kenji Lim Chuan Chyi, 12, equalled the boys’ 11-12 years 50m butterfly meet record of 28:16 set last year.

More than 800 boys and girls took part in three age groups — Under-10, 11-12 years and 13-14 years — in the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle categories.

“When we started in 2004, we only had a few hundred entries. It is a good indication because more swimmers are showing their eagerness to compete,” said Helen.

Among the other partners in the series are Milo, National Sports Council and Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia.

The second leg will take place in Malacca on June 15 and 16 while the grand finals will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 24 and 25.

The top 24 swimmers from both legs in each category will qualify for the grand finals.

Competition official May Tan said the aim of the meet was to develop swimming at the grassroots.

“The meet serves as a platform for the youngsters to gauge their performances and impress the selectors for a place in their respective state training camps,” she added.'

Keith Lim proved ability with flying time in Malaysia Open 2013

The 56th Malaysia Open Swimming Championships 2013 was held in the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from 16-19 May, 2013 with participations from Hong Kong and India apart from our own local state teams. Compared to last year the participation of foreign teams were much lesser.

The championships was won by Team Selangor with 13 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze followed by Negeri Sembilan (5-0-0) and Sabah (4-4-4). Team Kuala Lumpur settled for a lower position with collection of 2 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze even though it collected the second highest medals in total.

The KL gold contributor was from Ian James Barr's 400m IM and 200m IM when he finished ahead of the rest with a winning time of 4:41.29s and 2:06.75s respectively. Ian has to settle for silver in both his 50m and 100m backstroke and a bronze for his 200m backstroke behind Tern Jian Han (Jhr).

Christina Loh

Christina Loh managed two silver in her 50m and 100m breaststroke after being edged by her senior Siow Yi Ting (NS).

Meanwhile, Tan Rou Ying, also contributed her fair share by clinching 2 bronze in her individual backstroke events.

In the relay events, the city girls won silver in the 4x100m medley relay and 2 bronze in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays.

The Malaysia Open swimming competition proved to be a great splashing ground for developing swimmers to race against the national swimmers and bigger giants from the international front. It was definitely challenging for the amateurs.

Upcoming IBSC swimmer, Keith Lim, 15, did the club proud when he secured a spot in the prelim heats in 100m butterfly event after improving on his seed time of 59.00s with a qualifying time of 57.58s. In the evening final, he swam along side Daniel Bego (Swk) and Chan Jie (Sel). Even though with lesser muscles to flaunt compared to the national hulks, Keith proved himself by flying to the touch pad and dipped to an even lower PB time of 56.73s to grab the bronze after the senior swimmers. With this new PB, Keith was very happy with his performance as he also hit the Youth Olympic Games B time.

Keith made his dad proud by earning his first medal in Malaysia Open in 100m butterfly with impressive time of 56.73s

Meanwhile, other younger IBSC swimmers gained rich experience in the championships. They may not have make it to the top but with courageous swim against high tide, many young swimmers have displayed great fighting spirits and improved their PBs tremendously.

The total of 15 medals by the KL team were the effort from the following swimmers.

Gold
Ian James Barr (400m IM 4:41.29s, 200m IM 2:06.75s)

Silver

The Star : Yi Ting on a mission

by ASHREENA PILLAI
My golden haul: Siow Yi Ting shows off the medals she won during the Malaysian Open Swimming Championship which ended at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil on Sunday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS / The Star.

KUALA LUMPUR: National swimmer Siow Yi Ting still has unfinished business in the pool. And that’s to better her national records.

She currently holds the national records in the 100m breaststroke (1:09.82), 200m breaststroke (2:27.80) and 200m individual medley (2:14.57).

The Negri Sembilan swimmer took time off to complete her BA in Arts and Sculpture from the University of Arkansas in the United States in 2010 and only returned to competitive swimming August 2011.

“It wasn’t easy to come back after a year off. In a way it was fun to take my mind of swimming and just focus on my studies but I still have some unfinished business in the pool,” said Yi Ting.

“I’m still capable of swimming fast times so it’s definitely given me a boost to want to try and break my national records.”

And the 27-year-old has no plans to call time on her career yet.

“I’m taking it one meet at a time. The goal is to compete as long as I can,” said Yi Ting.

“And I’m training better than ever ... even better than last year.

“I think I even surprised myself at how well I’m doing. So no, I don’t think it’s time yet.”

What’s more, her stellar performance at the recent Malaysian Open Swimming Champ–ionships where she amassed five gold medals in five events – 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m breastroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley – along with three meet records is proof that the swimmer is still as driven as ever.

“I’m very happy with my performance. It’s definitely a great start for me ahead of the World Championships (July) and the SEA Games (December),” said Yi Ting.

In fact, she has already qualified for the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m breastroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley for the world meet in Barcelona, Spain.

“I’m satisfied with most of my times ... maybe except for the 200m breaststroke.

“I was doubling events the first two days of competition and so I think it finally hit me (on Saturday).

“I would have loved to swim around the 2:30 mark in that one but I did a 2:32,” she added.

“It’s been a while since I’ve dipped under that mark, so it’ll be wonderful to achieve that at the worlds.”

The NST : SWIMMING: Bego poised to be the best again

By Ajitpal Singh

AFTER a premature return to the pool from three shoulder surgeries in the last two years, Daniel Bego is ready to reclaim his status as the best freestyle swimmer in Malaysia.

Bego was the star performer for Malaysia when he bagged five gold medals, four of them in record time, at the 2009 Sea Games in Laos.

However, he had to lay off swimming for more than a year after undergoing surgery on both his shoulders in 2011. He missed the 2011 Sea Games in Indonesia and also failed to qualify for last year's London Olympics.

The Sarawak swimmer had to go for a third surgery to correct a long-standing bone spur problem in his right shoulder.

Although he was overshadowed by 16-year-old Lim Ching Hwang at the Malaysia Open, Bego answered his critics with a gold medal in the men's 100m butterfly at National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Bego clocked 54.82 followed by Selangor's Chan Jie (56.02) and Kuala Lumpur's Keith Lim (56.73) to end his campaign in the meet with one gold and four silver.

"I am on a strict programme to rediscover my form and hopefully I can continue to make progress. Although I still go for rehab, my condition is much better than before," said Bego yesterday.

"I am clocking faster times but it is an ongoing process. I have a lot do before I can swim faster. I am training hard to regain my form."

On Ching Hwang's performance in the freestyle discipline, Bego said he was happy with the youngster's progress.

"I came in second best to him in three events here. However, I will try my best to close the gap and hopefully swim faster than him in upcoming meets," he said.

Bego will compete in two meets ahead of the World Championships in July, where he has qualified for the 200m freestyle and the Sea Games in Myanmar in December.

Selangor were crowned overall champions in the Malaysia Open with a haul of 13 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze followed by Negri Sembilan (5-0-0) and Sabah (4-4-4).

RESULTS -- Men's 50m freestyle: 1 Lim Ching Hwang (Sel) 23.62s, 2 Daniel Bego (Sar) 23.68, 3 Anshul Kothari (Ind) 24.01; 100m butterfly: 1 Daniel Bego (Sar) 54.84, 2 Chan Jie (Sel) 56.02, 3 Keith Lim (KL) 56.73; 200m backstroke: 1 Tern Jian Han (Joh) 2:06.75, 2 Ashwin Menon (Ind) 2:10.07, 3 Ian James Barr (KL) 2:11.95; 1500m freestyle: 1 Kevin Yeap (Per) 15:45.87, 2 Welson Sim (Sar) 15:47.69, 3 Vernon Lee (Sar) 16:10.34.

The Star : Sarawakian Daniel makes a winning return from injury

By ASHREENA PILLAI

KUALA LUMPUR: Coming back from injury is never easy.

Beaming winner : Daniel Bego returned from injury in fine style by winning the 100m butterfly gold and 50m freestyle silver in the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday. - Bernamapic

So it’s great to see Daniel Bego triumph in the 100m butterfly on the final day of the Malaysian Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The Sarawakian clocked in at 54.84 ahead of Selangor’s Chan Jie (56.02) and Kuala Lumpur’s Keith Lim (56.73) for his first gold of the championships.

Daniel narrowly missed out on adding a second gold as he finished a mere .06 seconds behind Selangor’s Lim Ching Hwang (23.62) in the 50m freestyle. India’s Anshul Kothari was third on 24.01. This brings Daniel’s championships total to one gold and four silvers, which came from the 100m freestyle (Thursday), 200m freestyle (Friday) and 400m freestyle (Saturday).

“I’d hoped to win more, but it’s not too bad. One gold and four silvers... I’ll take it,” said a smiling Daniel after his race.

“I have nothing but respect for the kid (Ching Hwang). He’s only 16 and he’s swimming that fast. So I’m definitely looking forward to our duels and giving him a strong challenge.”

The 24-year-old, a five-time gold medallist at the Laos SEA Games in 2009, was out of action after undergoing two shoulder surgeries to correct a long-standing bone spur problem in April and June in 2011. Having only returned to the pool in December last year, Daniel is still undergoing rehabilitation for his injury and admits he has some work to do ahead of the SEA Games in Myanmar in December.

“I’m happy with my performances here. All my times were the fastest since I came back from my injury, so it’s definitely moving in a positive direction,” said Daniel, who has already qualified for the 200m and 400m freestyle events at the Games in Myanmar.

“I’m still undergoing rehab for my shoulder. And I still have more work to do in the pool. But it’s a great move forward.”

Meanwhile, Selangor’s Khoo Cai Lin added one gold and one bronze in the 800m and 50m freestyle events respectively to her medal tally. Earlier, she won the 400m freestyle and the 200m butterfly and a silver from the 200m freestyle.

Perak’s Kevin Yap won the 1,500m freestyle in 15:45.87, ahead of Sarawak duo Welson Sim (15:47.69) and Vernon Lee who finished in 16:10.34.

However, the mark was off his personal best of 15:32.51 (also the meet record) which was achieved at last year’s Malaysian Open.

Swimming powerhouse Selangor top the championships medal tally with 36 medals in total – 13 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze. Negri Sembilan finished second with five golds while Sabah rounded up the top three with 12 medals (four golds, four silvers, four bronzes).

mStar Online : Kevin Cipta Rekod Kebangsaan Dalam Acara 400 Meter Gaya Bebas

The NST : SWIMMING: Kevin smashes national record

SWIMMER Kevin Yeap must thank teammate Daniel Bego for pushing him to the limits after the 24-year-old recorded his career-first individual national record in the Malaysia Open at National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Ironically, it was Daniel's record which he broke in the 400m freestyle. Kevin, representing Perak, clocked three minutes 53.26 seconds to smash the previous mark of 3:53.99 set by Daniel at the 2009 Laos Sea Games.

Kevin, a gold medallist at the 2011 Indonesia Sea Games, attributed his success to Daniel for giving him a tough race.

"Daniel pushed me so hard in the race and it motivated me to swim faster. It was a good race. I am happy that Daniel has come back strongly from a shoulder surgery," said the delighted Kevin yesterday.

As for Daniel, who finished in 3:54.01 for the silver medal, it was his third straight loss in the meet. He finished second to 16-year-old Lim Ching Hwang in the previous day's 100m and 200m freestyle. Vernon Lee came in third on 3:58.65.

"I always wanted to break an individual record but I was not expecting it today as I have never dipped below 3:54. I came close three times last year with a personal best of 3:54.19.

"I am delighted but I had to work hard for it. I pushed myself hard in training and it paid dividends," said Kevin.

On his goals, Kevin said he hopes to do well at the World Championships in Barcelona in July and also defend his Sea Games title in the 400m freestyle in Myanmar in December.

"It is hard to predict my chances in Myanmar as swimmers tend to pop up from nowhere in this region. As for now, my main rival will be a youngster from Thailand, who is based in Japan," said Kevin.

The swimmer is hoping to slash a few seconds off Jeffrey Ong's 22-year-old record of 15:23.61 in the 1,500m freestyle today.

"Hopefully, I can peak again tomorrow (today) and achieve my goal. My personal best of 15:32.51, achieved last year, is far off Jeffrey's record. I hope to improve my timing here and smash his record at the world meet," said Kevin.

Siow Yi Ting continued her mesmerising performance by winning her fifth gold of the meet in the 200m breaststroke in 2:32.97 followed by Nadia Adrianna Redza (2:40.87) and Phee Jing En (2:45.39). It was also her third meet record in the competition.

"I hope to make it sixth tomorrow (today) in the 50m freestyle," said Yi Ting.

The Star : Kevin smashes 400m freestyle national record to take gold

By ASHREENA PILLAI

KUALA LUMPUR: Another day, another record tumbles.

Well done: Perak’s Kevin Yeap (left) being congratulated by Sarawak’s Daniel Bego after winning the men’s 400m freestyle final in the Malaysian Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday. Kevin won in a new national time of 3:53:26. —I ZZRAFIQA LIAS/ The Star.

This time it’s Kevin Yeap who reigned supreme to claim his first individual national record at the Malaysian Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The Perak swimmer powered home to clock 3:53.26 in the 400m freestyle to smash Daniel Bego’s national record of 3:53.99 set at the 2009 Laos SEA Games en route to clinching the gold.

Sarawak’s Daniel was again the bridesmaid, taking home his third silver of the meet in 3:54.01. Fellow Sarawakian Vernon Lee finished third in 3:58.87.

“I’m very happy ... it’s the first time I’ve dipped under 3:54. It was a really good race, and Daniel, he really pushed me hard,” said a delighted Kevin, who qualified fastest in the heats after equalling his previous best of 3:54.19.

In fact, Kevin had been hoping to break the 400m freestyle record for some time now, having come close three times previously.

“I came close at last year’s Malaysian Open, Dubai Swimming Championships and the Southeast Asian Championships but I was about 0.05 seconds off the pace,” said the 24-year-old.

“So, I’m really glad it happened today. And I managed to peak at the right time. I’ve been pushing myself hard in training to swim faster ... so, I guess all the hardwork in the pool has paid off.”

He’s not stopping there though as he’s now got his sights on breaking Jeffery Ong’s 22-year-old 1,500m freestyle national record of 15:23.01.

When Jeffery set the mark in at the Universiade Games in Sheffield, United Kingdom, in 1991, Kevin was just two years old.

Kevin’s personal best in the 1,500m freestyle is 15:32.51, which he achieved at last year’s Malaysian Open, and the youngster is looking forward to breaking the mark at the World Championships in Barcelona in July.

“That’s next on my list. Hopefully, I can peak again at the World Championships and give it a real go,” said Kevin, who has qualified for both the 400m freestyle and 1,500m freestyle.

Meanwhile, Siow Yi Ting and Khoo Cai Lin also notched new meet records en route to striking gold in the 200m breaststroke and 400m freestyle respectively.

Yi Ting’s 2:32.97 was enough to see her clinch her third meet record of the meet while Cai Lin took the 400m title in style in 4:17.73.
